A time for global challenge
Over the last decades the human civilization has come across global challenges, such as the crash of the bipolar world, the growth of the inter-civilization conflicts (the growing Islamic factor, the formation of the new power centre in South East Asia), globalization problems, nature disasters (demographic crisis and cataclysms, pandemics) and much more else; these global challenges and problems force the society to listen to the leading thinkers of the world, philosophers and sociologists who search for new explanations of the massive world processes, which happen at the beginning of the 21st century and who try to find out effective ways of the human civilization development.
Current achievements of the social-political and liberal Thought of the West and especially East, are often little-known to the Russian intellectuals and even more to the society. In the meantime, the impact of the “power of thought” on the development of the modern world is undoubtfully great. Russia has to be inside the discourse of the world social Thought, so that, it can choose the suitable action pattern along the framework of the forming “order of the new world”.
In 2008 Rosbalt News Agency and Russian Academy of Sciences are planning to organize a series of public lectures of the reputable world intellectuals and influence leaders held in St. Petersburg.
St. Petersburg. Why?
During this significant 2006 year for Russia when it holds the Presidency of the G8 group, St. Petersburg will host the world G8 leaders summit and the world will closely watch it. Not everyone agrees with the fact, that Russia is an equal member of the G8 group, and possibly these doubts have some grounds to that. Yet, according to us, it can be viewed as a stimulus for proving that Russia remains among the governments which form the outlines of the future. St. Petersburg which is historically considered a centrepoint of various cultures- is an ideal place for a global talk about the future of the human civilization.
In particular, in St Petersburg the best scientific and educational centres of the modern Russia are concentrated. By many Russian citizens St Petersburg is perceived as an intellectual and a spiritual centre of Russia.
Project Partners
The implementation of the project is largely supported by St Petersburg’s and Moscow’s scientific centres and mass media.

Gorbachev Fund ( The international fund of social-economic and politological research) 5. Board of foreign and defense politics (SVOP) 6. “Russia in global affairs” journal 7. After the lecture, members of the audiences can ask questions. The order and the regulations of the event is determined by the lecturer. The lectures are opened for attendance, however initial accreditation is required. If the lecturer agrees, it is advised to organize a separate meeting with St. Petersburg’s journalists in the form of a “press-club”. |
