Project participants

 M.J. Akbar (India) - the first participant of the project. His lecture will be held on 23th October, 2006, in University Center, St. Petersburg.

Mubashar Jawed Akbar (b. 1951)is a leading Indian journalist and author. He's the founder and editor-in-chief of The Asian Age, a daily multi-edition Indian newspaper with a global perspective. He has written several books, including Byline (New Delhi: Chronicle Books, 2003), a biography of Jawaharlal Nehru titled 'Nehru: The Making of India', a book on Kashmir titled 'Kashmir: Behind the Vale', 'Riot After Riot' and 'India: The Siege Within'. He also authored 'The Shade of Swords', a cohesive history of Jihad.

M J Akbar is also the editor-in-chief of The Deccan Chronicle, a Hyderabad-based news daily. He is the only Indian Newspaper Editor who Blogs!

He comes from Kashmiri Muslim ancestry. He attended Calcutta Boys' School when its principal was the legendary Clifford Hicks, and later Presidency College, Calcutta He belongs to the rare breed of journalists who have made a significant impact on Indian society by their writing as columnists and authors. He revolutionized Indian journalism in the seventies and the eighties by successfully launching and establishing the weekly magazine Sunday and the daily newspaper, The Telegraph at the age of 28 years. He took a brief detour into politics with his election to the Indian Parliament in November 1989 but returned to his first passion, writing and editing, in 1993.

The books he has published have achieved great international acclaim: Riot after Riot; Nehru: The Making of India; India: The Siege Within and Kashmir: Behind the Vale, Byline and The Shade of Swords: Jihad and the Conflict Between Islam and Christianity, published in 2002, is perhaps his most influential and prophetic work.
